Resin Infiltration
Fast, minimally invasive solution for treating white spot lesions
Learn how dental resin infiltration, a minimally invasive technique, helped our patient overcome self-consciousness caused by white spot lesions on her front teeth in this case study. We’ll explore how this treatment transformed her smile, giving her the chance to feel more confident while improving her overall well-being.
Consultation
Ms. M, a 32-year-old woman, visited our dental clinic with concerns about white spots on her front teeth, which she had noticed since childhood. She expressed dissatisfaction with their appearance, particularly when smiling, and sought a solution to enhance the aesthetics of her teeth.
Diagnosis and treatment plan
Following a thorough clinical assessment, Ms. M was diagnosed with fluorosis affecting the enamel of her teeth. While fluorosis itself does not harm dental health, it presents a cosmetic issue since the visible white spots give the enamel surface an uneven colour tone.
Resin infiltration was chosen in the treatment plan to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the affected teeth. This procedure involves the application of a low-viscosity resin into the porous enamel, effectively filling the lesions and improving the natural optical properties of the enamel surface.
Resin infiltration procedure
The first step in resin infiltration for enamel lesions involves meticulously cleaning and isolating the teeth to ensure optimal treatment. A gentle etching gel is then applied to the enamel surface, creating microscopic pores that facilitate resin penetration. Next, a low-viscosity resin infiltrant is carefully applied and cured with a light source. This resin effectively fills the demineralised enamel, mimicking its natural translucency and colour for a seamless restoration.
Subsequently, any excess material is removed, and the treated surface is polished to blend in smoothly with the surrounding unaffected enamel. This minimally invasive procedure offers a significant advantage: it strengthens weaker enamel against acid attacks while drastically improving the aesthetics of the affected teeth. This makes it a highly desirable conservative alternative to more invasive treatments such as drilling and traditional fillings.
Restored aesthetics, renewed confidence
Ms. M tolerated the procedure well with minimal discomfort. Post-treatment photographs revealed a significant improvement. Prior to treatment, the white spots were quite obvious, but after treatment they became close to indistinguishable, giving her teeth a more uniform appearance. This improvement not only enhanced Ms. M’s smile, but also boosted her confidence, enabling her to smile more freely.
