What are 3D-printed dentures?

3D-printed dentures are a particular dental prosthetic made using 3D printing technology to replace missing teeth. Set apart from the traditional labour-intensive method which uses moulds and manual work, 3D printing brings improved efficiency, precision and communication to each stage of the process.

The process used to create custom 3D-printed dentures not only results in better outcomes for patients, but also makes their treatment experiences more enjoyable. The procedures involved are less intrusive than traditional methods and allow for greater levels of customisation to meet each patient’s specific needs. Using an extremely precise 3D-printer, the denture is produced layer by layer to create a custom solution which fits the patient’s mouth with utmost comfort.

What are the different types of dentures?

    Complete dentures

    • These are designed to replace all teeth in either the upper or lower arch, or both.
    • Ideal for individuals who have lost all of their natural teeth in one or both jaws.
    • Complete dentures improve chewing ability, speech and aesthetics.

    • Provides immediate tooth replacement while the gums heal.
    • Requires adjustments as the mouth heals and reshapes.

    Partial dentures

    • Used when some natural teeth are still present.
    • Designed to fill in the gaps created by missing teeth.
    • They help maintain tooth alignment, prevent shifting and improve functionality.

    Implant-supported dentures

    • Secured to dental implants surgically placed in the jawbone.
    • Offers enhanced stability and prevents issues like slipping.
    • Ideal for those seeking a more permanent and secure tooth replacement option.

What is the 3D-printed denture process?

          1. Digital Scanning

Whereas previous methods required physical impressions to be taken of the patient’s teeth and gums, the design of 3D-printed dentures requires a less-intrusive procedure known as digital scanning. In this, a precise digital scan is taken of your oral cavity using an intraoral scanner. This scan, also called a digital impression, forms the foundation, creating a detailed 3D model that captures the unique contours and structure of your mouth.

          2. Design

The digital scans are then sent to a dental lab where the dentures are virtually designed using dental modelling software. This involves tailoring the design to match the specifics of your oral anatomy, ensuring a customised fit that aligns perfectly with your individual needs.

          3. Printing

Once the denture design has been finalised, the digital design will be transferred to the 3D printer. This advanced technology utilises an additive manufacturing process in which, layer by layer, your custom denture design materialises with precision and accuracy.

          4. Post-Processing

After 3D printing is complete, the dentures undergo post-processing. This may include cleaning, curing, coating, and polishing which not only ensures a smooth and comfortable fit, but also enhances strength and aesthetics.

          5. Fitting

Once the 3D-printed dentures are finished, your Simply Teeth dentist will receive them from the lab for final fitting. They will then be carefully fitted to your mouth, ensuring they align seamlessly with your oral structure. Any necessary adjustments will be made to optimise comfort and functionality, guaranteeing a personalised and effective solution tailored just for you.
