What is a 3D-printed dental crown?

A 3D-printed dental crown is a custom-designed cap for a severely damaged or decayed tooth. It effectively covers and protects the tooth while restoring its shape, size, strength and appearance. With 3D printing technology, the process is precise and efficient, providing you with a custom crown that fits accurately and looks completely natural.

Who needs a dental crown?

Here are some specific situations where dental crowns may be recommended:

    • To strengthen a weak tooth: If a tooth is significantly weakened due to decay, a large filling or a crack, a dental crown offers essential support and protection. This prevents further damage or breakage, ensuring the tooth’s stability.
    • To restore a broken or worn-down tooth: Dental crowns effectively restore the shape, function, and appearance of a tooth that has been broken, chipped, or extensively worn down due to erosion or grinding.
    • To conceal misshapen or discoloured teeth: A dental crown can hide discolouration, reshape a misshapen tooth or address aesthetic concerns, enhancing the overall appearance of the smile.
    • To support a dental bridge: Serving as the anchoring point for a dental bridge, a crown provides a secure base for replacing missing teeth. It is attached to adjacent teeth to support the bridge.
    • To cover a dental implant: Dental crowns are commonly used to cover dental implants, offering a natural-looking and functional replacement for a missing tooth.
    • To improve bite function: In certain cases, crowns may be recommended to enhance bite function, particularly if a tooth is misaligned or causing irregularities in the bite.
    • To protect a tooth after a root canal: Following a root canal, a tooth may become more brittle and prone to breakage. A crown adds strength and protection to the weakened tooth, preserving its integrity.
    • For cosmetic enhancement: Crowns contribute to an improved smile by covering up cosmetic imperfections, restoring the natural shape, and enhancing the colour of the tooth.

      3D-printed dental crown installation

      1. Consultation and evaluation

We start by carefully assessing your dental condition to determine if 3D-printed crown is the most suitable treatment option. This evaluation considers the extent of tooth damage, the overall health of your teeth and your individual needs and preferences.

      2. Intraoral scanning

If we find it suitable, we’ll take a digital impression of your teeth using our advanced intraoral scanner. This device captures a high-resolution digital image of your teeth, providing us with a more accurate and detailed representation.

      3. Crown design and modelling

Next, we will send the digital impressions to a dental laboratory and they will use the scans to create a 3D model of your teeth. Dental labs use dental design software to assist in precisely designing the crown to fit over your prepared tooth. Factors such as shape, size, colour and contact with adjacent teeth are carefully considered during the design phase.

      4. 3D printing

The 3D design file is then sent to the 3D printer, which utilises a layer-by-layer deposition process to fabricate the crown from a biocompatible material (e.g., ceramic, resin or metal). This printing process typically takes a few hours, depending on the size and complexity of the crown.

      5. Finishing and polishing

Once the 3D printing is complete, the printed crown undergoes a thorough finishing and polishing process. This may involve removing any support structures, smoothing the surface and polishing the crown to achieve a natural-looking shine.

      6. Fitting and cementation

After completion, the dental lab will deliver the 3D-printed crown to our clinic for fitting and bonding. We will then try on the crown to ensure a precise fit and check the occlusion (bite) with your adjacent teeth. If necessary, we’ll make minor adjustments using dental hand tools. Once the fit is satisfactory, we’ll cement the crown onto your prepared tooth using special dental adhesive.

      7. Follow-up and monitoring

We will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor the fit, function and overall oral health of the crown. Regular checkups ensure that the crown is performing its intended function and preventing further tooth damage.
