Dental Fillings
Restores the appearance and function of damaged teeth.
Dental fillings are a common restorative solution for a tooth that has been damaged by decay, trauma or wear. Fillings involve the removal of decayed areas of a tooth, followed by filling the cavities left behind with a suitable filling material.
What dental filling options are available?
The type of filling your dentist will recommend may depend on the size and location of the cavity as well as your personal preference. Here at Simply Teeth, we offer two main options when it comes to filling materials: composite fillings and porcelain (ceramic) fillings.
Porcelain Fillings
Porcelain fillings, also known as ceramic fillings, are made from a mixture of glass and ceramic particles. This type of filling is colour-matched to the shade of your natural teeth and is strong enough to be used for large fillings in molars (back teeth). With CEREC technology, you can have your porcelain restoration completed in just one sitting. No need for messy impressions or temporary fillings – just 3D scanning and milling done right in our office. This will spare you from recurring visits to get a filling.
Gold Fillings
Gold fillings are made of a gold alloy material. The major benefit of gold fillings is that they are extremely durable for patients who grind and have a history of cracking teeth. They can also be used for large fillings in molars (back teeth). However, the main drawback is cost – gold is a costly material, this type of filling can be a more expensive option.
Composite Fillings
Composite fillings, also known as white fillings, are made up of resin and other filler materials. This type of filling can be colour-matched, making it the better option for front teeth as it blends in with your natural tooth colour. However, they may not be the best choice for large fillings in molars (back teeth) due to their shorter life span.
What about Amalgam Fillings?
Amalgam fillings, also known as silver fillings, are made up of a combination of metals such as mercury, silver, tin, zinc and copper. Although there have been some concerns over the presence of mercury in amalgam fillings, scientific studies have not proven any long-term health risks associated with them. The use of amalgam has declined since the development of bondable resin and ceramic fillings. Recent advances in white filling materials have greatly increased their strength, durability, and overall affordability. As dentistry shifts towards prevention and minimally invasive techniques, the use conservative materials has been favoured and preferred by patients and dentists in Australia.
